SUMMARY:Colonial Camp
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Camp is a week-long summer day camp (Monday-Friday\, 10:00am-2:00pm) intended for rising 4th-6th graders. Children learn about colonial history and archaeology through fun hands-on activities and make-and-take crafts such as dipping candles\, making ice cream\, sewing a sampler\, and writing secret messages like Revolutionary War spies! SUMMARY:Home School Day
DESCRIPTION:The Weems-Botts Museum welcomes area homeschool families to a tour of the historic house museum and a hands-on\, SOL-based lesson on archaeology. Families will participate in a mock “dig.” Kids will have so much fun they won’t even know they are learning about observations versus inferences while they use their critical thinking skills to interpret the artifacts they discover. They will also get the chance to hold real artifacts\, try and piece together potsherds\, and make a fossil imprint or petroglyph carving to take home. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it in our covered pavilion area in Merchant Park. $5/youth (6-18); adults and children under 6 free. Reservations appreciated.

SUMMARY:Dumfries Charter Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Merchant Park for a free\, family-friendly event commemorating the town’s 1749 charter\, which made Dumfries the first chartered town in Virginia. Opening ceremony to be held at the William Grayson Memorial Bandstand at 11:00 am followed by a schedule of musical and dance performances. The Weems-Botts Museum will be free and open to the public and will feature costumed interpreters in living history vignettes. Come chat with Parson Weems himself! Food and craft vendors\, living history demonstrations and reenactors\, children’s activities\, raffles\, and informational tables on local resources and historical organizations will be open throughout the event. Sponsored by the Town of Dumfries. Parking available alongside Merchant Park\, in the Dumfries United Methodist Church parking lot\, and in the Dumfries Elementary School Park lot (both parking lots are a very short walk to the park).
