Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit membership organization that operates the Weems-Botts Museum, hosts educational programs and events, and maintains a research library, archive, and collections on Dumfries’ history. Our mission is to preserve and promote the historic heritage of Dumfries – Virginia’s oldest chartered town. Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. was formed in 1974 as a volunteer group organized for the purpose of restoring the historic house and opening it as a museum for the public. The Weems-Botts Museum is owned by the Town of Dumfries and operated by Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. The Weems-Botts Museum and the Lee Lansing Research Library operate on a seasonal schedule. Merchant Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Public programs are offered year round including monthly free Children’s Days on the third Saturday of every month. Popular special events include Ghost Walks (Saturday evenings in October) and a free Holiday Open House (after the Town of Dumfries’ holiday parade). Charter Day, sponsored by the Town of Dumfries and Historic Dumfries Virginia, is held in May and commemorates the town’s charter with living history demonstrations, children’s activities, informational tables, concessions, and more!
